“The church is making great things happen in the community. This scholarship was a blessing I couldn’t have imagined. They’ve always been there for us — offering prayers, meals, and resources for those in need. They don’t judge; they just help.”

— Garry Davis, Paine College

The first in his family to attend college, Garry Davis is determined to change the trajectory of his life and his family. With wo older brothers have been incarcerated since 2025, the uncertainty of their future weighs heavily.

“My brothers’ trials were traumatic for me as a 14-year-old,” Davis says. “I didn’t know if I’d see them again. But I knew I had to be the one to break the cycle.”

With the support of The United Methodist Church and scholarships like the Dorothea H. and Raymond Dier Scholarship, Davis is doing just that. The scholarships are a lifeline, helping him pursue his education at Paine College, where he’s studying mass media.

“The church is making great things happen in the community,” Davis shares. “This scholarship was a blessing I couldn’t have imagined. They’ve always been there for us — offering prayers, meals, and resources for those in need. They don’t judge; they just help.”

Through these scholarships and the unwavering support of the church, Davis can focus on his education without the constant stress of financial hardship. He’s actively preparing for the next step in his journey — graduating, pursuing graduate school then launching his career.

In five years, Davis envisions himself working in his field, enjoying the simple pleasures of life, and perhaps even purchasing his first car and home. “I’m just going to let God do His work,” he says with conviction.

For Davis, the impact of these scholarships goes beyond financial aid — it’s a testament to the power of faith, community, and perseverance. “God has been blessing me,” he reflects. “I’ve been given extra time to pay my school balance, something that would’ve gotten other students kicked out. This is part of my testimony: God will move mountains for you if you just believe.”
